Microcystis

Microcystis

Small cells up to 5um in diameter,embedded densely in mucilage to form irregular colonies, often pierced with holes. In bogs and lakes, sometimes planktonic. Lamprocystis, one of the purple sulphur bacteria, has colonies like Microcystis, but pink, and lives in ponds and ditches with much decaying vegetation.
