Mallomonas

Like Ochromonas but covered all over with glassy scales of silica overlapping like roof tiles. Some species also have long silica spines at one or both ends or all over( as illustrated). Cells 5-50 micron long Fairly common in puddles ditches ponds and lakes especially in spring.

Small cells up to 5um in diameter, united into a hollaw, roughly spherical, floating colony, sometimes blackish in appearanco and often sur-rounded by mucilage.
