A representative of the small number of filamentous Desmids which are found in boggy pools etc.The filaments are cylindrical 5-40 micron diameter and surrounded by a layer of mucilage. 

Desmidium is a similar genus bet the filaments usually have a toothed outline and are most frequently triangular in cross section.
