Plant body tubular hollow (46b c natural size) up to 1 cm wide and 15 cm or more long composed of cells with thick walls and parietal chloroplasts (46a) Sometimes very conspicuous floating in masses on the surface of slow rivers and canals or entangled with larger water plants and may be abundant in brackish water.

Ophiocytium

Ophiocytium Cylindrical or sausage-shaped epiphytic or free floating unicells 3-20 micron diameter each with two or more pale green chloroplasts. They vary from short to very elongated and are often curved or even loosely coiled. In the common species shown here the young cells attach themselves to the lip of the mother cell wall which is itself attached to a Cladophora filament.
