Grows in colonies up to0,5 mm across with numerous green cells 5-10 micron long embedded in an oily matrix which varies in colour from a clear yellow to totally opaque orange or brick red.Orange oil pigmented with carotene may be squeezed from it under a cover slip.Plankton of ponds and lakes often floating on the water sometimes abundant forming a thick scum 33a a colony33b part of this flattened under a cover slip to show cells.
