Highly organised filaments, forming brown or green mucilaginous branching tufts up to several em long on rocks and stones in streams and springs, occasionally in mountain tarns. Branches usually consist of a central axis from which arise whorls of tiny branches, usually giving a beaded appearance. 94a, axis with whorls of small branches and two major ones ( the 'birds' nests' are reproductive bodies ) ; 94b and c, small branches, at a moderate and a high magnification.
